Leading an independent life

“Girls should believe in themselves and become independent. They must do what they aspire for and trust people wisely.”

Leading an independent life 1

Nargis

Trained at Tech Mahindra Foundation's SMART centre in association with Dr AV Baliga Memorial Trust

As Aristotle said, “it is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light”, Nargis is the living example of seeing the brighter side, always. Nargis is the daughter of a carpenter in Jamia Miliia Islamia, who was the sole earner of the family. But due to the pandemic, the university was closed and her father couldn’t continue his job, which led to financial uncertainty and a dark future. She wanted to support her family and become a ray of hope for them but due to a lack of skills and confidence, she was not sure of the way forward. One day, she got to know about Tech Mahindra Foundation’s SMART program from one of our field mobilizers in her localityand she decided to join the nearest SMART centre.

She enrolled in the 4-months course of Customer Relationship and Sales among various skilling courses offered at our SMART centre. With a zeal to get trained in new skills and the right learning attitude, she completed the course. Apart from the skill training, she learned English speaking, basic IT skills and computers to improve her job readiness. After consistently applying for job interviews, she got placed in Al-Nawaz, which is one of the most reputed restaurants in the Okhla region of Delhi.

Today, as an independent working girl with a decent salary, Nargis feels much more confident about travelling during odd hours and meeting new people. She gives priority to her work and earning a good life for herself as well as her family. Her parents are really thankful to Tech Mahindra Foundation and Dr AV Baliga Memorial Trust for such an initiativeto offer courses without any charges or high fee structureand empower youth to lead a dignified life.

Being an inspiration for many young girls in her locality, she emphasises that, “Girls should believe in themselves and become independent. They must do what they aspire for and trust people wisely.”While she has learnt a lot in accounting at her current position, she aspires to excel in her career and join a big organisation in a better position.
