“Teaching is about bringing a smile to someone’s life”, says Jayshree, a pre-primary teacher for the last seven years and is currently teaching at one of the NMMC Schools in Mumbai. While growing up, Jayshree Tukaram Khandekar always wanted to be a teacher and help children become honest, hard-working and good human beings.
Jayashree has a Master’s Degree in Marathi and has been an educator in schools for many years. But she had a tough time in engaging children in her classroom and planning age-appropriate activities for them. It was only after training sessions, organized by Tech Mahindra Foundation and Save The Children India for pre-primary teachers that she gained her confidence and had a deeper understanding of child development. As a part of Tech Mahindra Foundation’s Shikshaantar program, this training was designed with an aim to enhance the knowledge of early-childhood education and skills of teachers like Jayshree, who teach children in the age group 3-6 years of age.
The training helped Jayashree to improve her teaching methodology and make her classes more interesting. Today, she focuses on teaching through a play-way method which has made her classroom environment more engaging. Now, her students eagerly wait for the story and rhyme sessions after she starts using voice modulation to tell the story or recite the rhyme. Apart from the pedagogy, Jayashree is also able to maintain the classroom decorum through the different transition activities learnt at the training. Today, her students are keen to attend and watch her reciting poems and narrating stories. Also, the parents have started developing interest in their daily activities and homeworks after witnessing their childrens’ progress.
