From a Student to a Guide to Others

Uma
Alumna of Arvind Foundation ARISE+ Project, Chennai

Uma joined Chennai’s Arvind Foundation, one of TMF’s supported ARISE+ disability projects, eight years ago with the dream of becoming financially independent and supporting her family. From the beginning, with determination and focus, she immersed herself in learning a variety of vocational skills, including block printing, tailoring, and crafting products from Areca leaves.

Despite the initial challenges, Uma remained steadfast, continuously refining her skills and embracing every opportunity to improve. Her dedication extended beyond just learning—she actively participated in group activities, helped organize workshops, and mentored newer students. Her diligent work ethic and attention to detail soon started getting noticed by both trainers and peers.

Always eager to support others, Uma became a role model, inspiring her fellow students to pursue their dreams with confidence. Recognized for her hard work and potential, she was offered the role of Junior Vocational Trainer at Arvind Foundation, a milestone she proudly accepted. In her current position, she is not just earning a livelihood but also shaping the future of many young individuals with disabilities, training them to become self-reliant just like her.
