Over the last couple of years, we have seen a paradigm shift in the way the world is assessing its growth and development across different sectors including education and the economy. Various National and International reports have unequivocally stressed that while education is an ongoing process of improving knowledge and skills, it is also – perhaps, primarily – an exceptional means of bringing about personal development and building relationships among individuals, groups, nations, and with the natural world around us.
The global pandemic has strengthened this notion, as the need for resilience, adaptation, and compassion has come to the forefront on all fronts: political, social, technological, economic, and cultural. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) study in 2017 examined the rise in anxiety, stress, and depression in the youth. In India alone, about 25% of children between the ages of 13 and 15 suffer from some form of depression or anxiety. The highly competitive nature of the present education system, the growing uncertainty of the employment market, and the types of jobs that will be in demand in the future have been mentioned as some of the major causes for the growing levels of stress and anxiety.
To keep pace with such drastic changes, while continuing to contribute responsibly in society, the role of social and emotional skills is imperative. Psychologists and neuroscientists have discerned that through social-emotional learning, negative emotions can be directed towards peace and constructive action. Specifically, building competencies of attention regulation through programs on mindfulness and emotional regulation – which build positive peer relationships, and compassion – has been shown to regulate and reduce stress, anxiety, and aggression, and promote peaceful and prosocial behaviour.
Another reason to promote Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is the correlation between its application in schools and students’ academic success. Research has shown the importance of caring teacher-student and student-student relationships in fostering students’ commitment to school and in promoting academic success. When a child can understand oneself and others, take in social information accurately to make good decisions, interact successfully, and regulate behaviour, many classroom learning tasks are made easier. The child with SEL strengths, social interactions in the school and outside are replete with information about the self and how to succeed, to become competent; it is within these social environments that children learn holistic values, standards, and motivation.
Tech Mahindra Foundation (TMF), the CSR arm of Tech Mahindra Limited, is aware that India has the world’s largest cohort of young people and nearly 10% of its population is under the age of five. We strongly believe India needs to focus on the overall development of the students for their personal and professional growth.
The Foundation is committed to creating happier and safer classrooms by empowering teachers, educators, and leaders in knowledge, skills, and attitude domains aiming for effective school governance. Through Shikshaantar, one of its flagship programmes in Education, the Foundation has trained over 36,700 teachers of government schools in major cities of India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata. In Delhi, the Foundation has been working in partnerships with the East Delhi Municipal Corporation since 2013, and with the North Delhi Municipal Corporation since 2018, by running the In-Service Teacher Education Institutes (ITEIs) on their behalf.
Various workshops under the Shikshaantar umbrella aim at enhancing parental involvement, the capacity of teachers and teacher educators on leadership, pedagogical skills, and competencies related to subject teaching-learning. For creating a conducive and safe learning space, the Foundation has initiated multiple interventions to create awareness about child safety, mental health awareness programs, empowering teachers with counselling skills to ensure students’ well-being etc.
The Foundation wishes to foster a positive culture and climate through all its programs and activities. The well-being of its employees and creating a culture of respect and collective responsibility are at the core of TMF values. We take a comprehensive approach by extensive training, integrating social-emotional learning through all activities, and a curriculum to specifically develop skills across the core competencies of SEL.
On the occasion of the International Social Emotional Learning Day on 11th March 2022, Tech Mahindra Foundation hosted Saajhi Samajh on Integrating Social-Emotional Learning in Education. The seventh edition of Saajhi Samajh focused on the importance of Social-Emotional Learning.
In the past, the Foundation has hosted several seminars with a focus on Education and Employability by bringing together an array of experts and specialists. These events, titled ‘Saajhi Samajh’ (or Shared Understanding), are the Foundation’s attempt towards creating a broader platform to enable advocacy through discourse and discussion on issues related and relevant to the development of teacher training and education in India.
